Irish fiddler Martin Hayes is known worldwide for his soulful interpretations of traditional Irish music. His new quartet with guitarist Dennis Cahill –a fellow member of supergroup The Gloaming– is called “a highly resonant coming together” by the Irish Times.
Hayes and Cahill expand their legendary explorations of Irish music with the brilliant Liz Knowles (Bobby McFerrin, Bang-on-a-Can Orchestra, Riverdance) on viola, and New York City downtown musician Doug Wieselman (Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Antony & the Johnsons) on the bass clarinet. The unexpected combination draws from classical, jazz, and even minimalism.
The Martin Hayes Quartet expands on many of the musical ideas pursued by Martin in his longstanding partnership with Cahill. The melody still remains central but now with an added range of sonic possibilities provided by the bass clarinet and viola d’amore. The addition of these instruments creates an added aural texture and amplifies the rhythmic possibilities while also allowing a larger role for improvisation. Both Doug and Liz bring a wealth of musical experience that contributes to the spacious, rich arrangements of the Quartet. Doors open at 7:00 pm, show starts at 8:00 pm
