In the early 1980s, local political activist and writer, Chris Matthews opened The Poet & The Patriot Irish Pub with his wife, Sue Heinz, and his brother and his longtime pals Ed Alheit and Tim McCormick.

Named in honor of Irish poet Padraig Pierce and patriot James Connolly, the Poet and Patriot became a second home for an entire generation of Santa Cruz writers and political activists, Vietnam vets and Irish partisans. Matthews was always center stage.
