San Patricios Day at Wawona Gates

On Sunday, September 12th, “San Patricios Day” will be put on at Wawona Gates by sponsoring organizations the United Irish Cultural Center, Dowling Library, Irish Culture Bay Area and the San Francisco Irish Mexican Association. The St. Patrick’s Battalion was made up of Irish conscripted soldiers who deserted the U.S. army to bravely defend Mexico during the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. This event honors the San Patricios’ legacy and celebrates the commonalities and kinship of Mexican and Irish people and cultures, featuring Mexican and Irish traditional music and dance performances. Renowned historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz will give a talk on “The San Patricio Battalion, a Lesson in Anti-Colonial Solidarity”. Free admission – all ages welcome.
