Crossroads Festival: Indigenous-Irish Relationships

“A Dialogue About Indigenous-Irish Relationships and Building Solidarity on Ohlone Land”

This event is an Irish community fundraiser for the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust, highlighting the campaign to save the West Berkeley Shellmound while considering local and global relationships between Irish and American Indian peoples. Presentations by Corrina Gould (Chochenyo/Karkin Ohlone, Spokesperson for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan/Ohlone, Co-Founder of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust and Indian People Organizing for Change), Dr. Sé Sullivan (Lecturer in Gender and Women’s Studies, UC Berkeley), Matt Horton (Doctoral Candidate, UC Berkeley) and a discussion about how Irish people can support indigenous sovereignty in the Bay Area.

Bios:

Corrina Gould is the spokesperson for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan/Ohlone. She was born and raised in Oakland, CA, the territory of Huichuin. She is an activist that has worked on preserving and protecting the ancient burial sites of her ancestors in the Bay Area, co-founder of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust and Indian People Organizing for Change.

Dr. Sé Sullivan is a queer genderfluid activist scholar teaching in the Gender & Women’s Studies Program at UC Berkeley. They are a guest here on Ohlone lands and recognize the united states as a settler colonial nation state. They come to this conversation as a student of their Irish heritage as the price of whiteness is the loss of connection to their Irish indigeneity.

Matt Horton is a researcher in Irish Studies and Critical Whiteness Studies. His short presentation commemorating the 240th birthday of Robert Emmet will discuss Protestant Irish Nationalists as exemplars for Irish solidarity with American Indian peoples.
