About Blue Stocking Salon:

Norene Sheehan, originally from Cork, is a modern-day Salonnière with Blue Stockings Salon, which presents its members and guests with a whole new approach to social exchange.  Inspired by 18^th century Salons Norene hosts a modern-day version with  live, monthly events that invite dialog between the speaker and participants in a variety of intimate social settings.

A Reflection on Humanistic Medicine in our Technological Age.

“The past decade has witnessed a veritable explosion in the science of medicine. From genomics, to proteomics to new modalities of imaging and new therapeutics, medicine has never been more potent. Yet patient satisfaction with healthcare has not necessarily followed this trend.  Medical advances along with the advent of the electronic medical record have uniquely challenged both the nature of the patient experience and the physician-patient encounter. In understanding what is timeless about the patient experience and what is involved in the ritual of visiting a physician, we might better fulfill Peabody’s admonition that the “secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.”
There are few who combine a career as physician, teacher and author as well as Abraham Verghese, whose name is a frequent byline in newspapers and magazines across the globe. He himself is also a regular focus of attention in media – both medical and general – that range from National Public Radio, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the New York Times to The Guardian, and The Times of India.
His work as a physician informs his writing and the reflection that comes through his writing helps him empathize with his patients, and to see them individually, as human beings who are suffering, fearful and in need not just of treatment, but of comfort and reassurance.
