Martin & Eliza Carthy, Freight & Salvage Berkeley

Sunday, April 5th @ 7:00 pm

Martin Carthy is a folk legend with scores of albums to his credit, from solo projects to his work with Steeleye Span, the Albion Country Band, Brass Monkey, and Waterson: Carthy. His music has had a major influence on artists like Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and Richard Thompson. Q Magazine calls him “arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector, and editor of them all.”

His daughter Eliza is a powerhouse musician in her own right. She has released ten solo albums and appeared on scores of others, from the Grammy-winning Mermaid Avenue with Billy Bragg and Wilco, to The Harry Smith Project. The Evening Standard calls her “one of the figureheads of the English folk revival,” and BBC Online calls her “one of music’s, and not just folk’s, most important and innovative artists.”

These two folk stalwarts recently collaborated on their first duo album, The Moral of the Elephant, which BBC Radio 2 just nominated for Best Folk Album of 2015. “The way their voices swoop and bend together is a delight,” says The Telegraph. “As musicians, both father and daughter are at the top of their game, playing with a richness and hard-won grace that can only come from a lifetime of experience,” says the website AllMusic. “A late-career gem for Martin and a mid-career milestone for Eliza, the first family of British folk have managed to deliver a classic in its field.” These are two musicians who know what it takes to bring a song to life, and the wonder is that they make it look so easy.
