Take a field trip with your UICC friends to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to walk through a limited time exhibition featuring the work of a San Francisco Irish American artist—Joan Brown. [https://www.sfmoma.org/exhibition/joan-brown/]
One of San Francisco’s most important artists, Brown was of Irish descent, an avid swimmer, and painted scenes from her life in the Bay Area. Joan presents her critically acclaimed retrospective through March 12, 2023. The exhibit is comprised of eighty colorful paintings and sculptures and spans the charmingly personal and engaging career of one of San Francisco’s most important local heroes. Joan Brown drew inspiration from many sources to create works that merge autobiography, fantasy, and whimsy, with weightier metaphysical and spiritual themes. This retrospective is the most expansive presentation on the artist’s work in more than twenty years, charting the turns and devotions of a vision that was once dismissed by critics as unserious but was rooted firmly in impassioned curiosity and research and remains uniquely compelling today.
Time permitting, we will also walk through the SECA Award exhibition which has celebrated local Bay Area artists since 1967 and Ragnar Kjartansson’s beloved video installation The Visitors.
