#blackIrish: Some notes on becoming a trend
Wednesday, October 21st @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
In this talk on multiracial Ireland and Irish-America, Kimberly DaCosta (Associate Professor of Sociology, NYU Gallatin) will consider emergent public discussion among those who identify as Black and Irish. Coming as it does in the midst of an international reckoning with anti-blackness and white supremacy, what does this conversation help us understand about contemporary racial dynamics in Ireland and the US? How might it require us to reimagine our past?
Speaker:
Kimberly McClain DaCosta, a sociologist, is especially interested in the contemporary production of racial boundaries. Her book, Making Multiracials: State, Family, and Market in the Redrawing of the Color Line (Stanford University Press, 2007), explores the cultural and social underpinnings of the movement to create multiracial collective identity in the United States. She is currently working on a study of the advertising industry and the structural, economic and cultural dimensions of ethnic marketing. Before joining NYU, Professor DaCosta taught in African American Studies and Social Studies at Harvard University. Professor DaCosta’s work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Advertising Educational Foundation and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. She teaches courses on race in different societies, families, and consumerism in international perspective. Professor DaCosta is an Associate Faculty member in the NYU Department of Sociology and also serves as Associate Dean of Students at the Gallatin School.
