In 2012, an FCC license became available for an NCE (Non-commercial educational) radio station at 90.1 FM.  A group of San Lorenzo Valley community members began to discuss plans to support the Boulder Creek Recreation and Parks District (BCRPD) in purchasing the license. The community members had several meetings and were excited to begin broadcasting.  The radio signal would transmit to a large part of the San Lorenzo Valley.

On June 6, 2013 the BCRPD Board of Directors voted to move forward with plans to obtain the station.  The public voiced strong support for the project and the station, KBCZ Boulder Creek Community Radio at 90.1 FM was born.  Local residents began to arrive on KBCZ’s virtual doorstep wanting to get involved. Tim Welch was named Interim Director, Tina Davey and Sam Peacock were named Interim Associate Directors.

After a year of steadily building infrastructure and pre-programming original shows in a small studio at the Rec Center,  KBCZ began to stream on-line in 2014 then began broadcasting at 90.1FM in July of 2015.

In May of 2015, Tina Davey was hired as Station Manager, Paul Nanna was named Technical Director.

In September of 2016, KBCZ set up shop at local music studio, Boulder Creek Music Works and with the help of Music Works owner, Barry Tanner, conducted their first live Monday through Friday morning shows until February of 2017.

In December of 2016, the BCRPD gave KBCZ permission to share space at it’s visitor center in downtown Boulder Creek at 13200 Hwy 9 and with the help of Matt and Leslie Buchanan, who built the broadcast space, KBCZ opened it’s doors to the public in February of 2017.

In January of 2017, Leslie Buchanan was named Promotions Director.

In June of 2017 the visitor center closed and the BCRPD gave KBCZ full use of the space.

The radio station currently has 25 local DJ’s.  Programming currently is focused on music shows, with a live drive-time show that is on Monday through Friday 4:00pm to 6:00pm and with many other shows throughout the week. The station is looking to work with residents to create talk shows that discuss all range of subjects like cooking, good health practices, cars, hobbies and other topics of interest to the community.  Programs for children and teens are being sought as well.

KBCZ is non-political and non-religious and is managed by one part-time staffer that oversees a group of dedicated participants.

As a proud program of the Boulder Creek Recreation District, the radio station provides a unique recreational outlet for a portion of the residents that were previously underserved by the District. BCRPD is proud to offer this innovative program with all its potential for creative growth and looks forward to its evolution within and by the community it serves.  Tune in!

KBCZ can be heard locally at 90.1 FM and all over the world at www.kbcz.org.
